Layering Medical-Grade Skin Care

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO LAYERING MEDICAL-GRADE SKIN CARE PRODUCTS 2023

Achieving healthy, radiant skin often requires more than just a single product. Many of my patients have turned to medical-grade skin care products to address specific concerns like acne, hyperpigmentation or ageing. But how do you layer these products for maximum effectiveness? In this comprehensive yet simple guide, we'll walk you through both your morning and evening routines, including when to use products like retinoids, vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid serum and more.

Morning Skincare Routine

Cleansing: Start your skincare routine with a clean slate by cleansing your face with a cleanser that has been selected for your skin type or choose a gentle cleanser that won’t strip your skin. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. This step removes impurities and prepares your skin for the subsequent products.

Toning: After cleansing, apply a toner to balance your skin's pH levels and refine your pores. This will help your skin better absorb the following products.

Treatment Products: Apply any prescribed treatment products, such as serums or medications after toning. These products target specific skin concerns, such as acne, hyperpigmentation or fine lines. Always follow your clinicians instructions regarding their use.

Vitamin C Serum: Brighten your complexion and protect against environmental damage by applying a few drops of vitamin C serum to your face and neck.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum: Lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated throughout the day with a few drops of hyaluronic acid serum.

Eye Cream: Gently apply an eye cream around your eye area, tapping with your ring finger. This will help hydrate and protect the delicate skin around your eyes.

Moisturiser: Next, apply a moisturiser, to lock in hydration and nourish your skin. Choose one suitable for your skin type (e.g., oily, dry, or combination) for the best results. This will help provide a smooth canvas for makeup application (if desired).

Sunscreen: Never skip this step! Finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day. This step is essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays.

Evening Skincare Routine

Makeup Removal: Begin your evening routine by thoroughly removing makeup using a makeup remover or cleansing oil/balm. Removing makeup in the evening is essential to prevent clogged pores, acne and skin dullness, as it allows your skin to breathe, renew itself and stay healthy.

Double Cleansing: Follow up with your gentle cleanser to cleanse your skin and remove any remaining impurities.

Toning: Apply a toner suitable for your skin type, again to further refine your pores and maintain balanced skin pH.

Night Treatment/Retinoid: In the evening, after cleansing and toning, consider using a medical-grade night treatment product, such as a retinoid/retinol, to promote skin cell turnover and improve texture. If your clinician has prescribed a retinoid like Tretinoin. Apply a pea-sized amount evenly to your face, avoiding the eye area. Be sure to follow your clinicians instructions, as retinoids can cause sensitivity and peeling.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum: Boost skin hydration by applying hyaluronic acid serum once again.

Night Moisturiser: Choose a medical-grade night moisturiser that suits your skin type. This provides essential nourishment and supports the skin's repair process while you sleep.

Eye Cream: Gently apply a small amount of medical-grade eye cream around your eye area to keep the skin moisturised overnight.

Weekly or Occasional Treatment

Exfoliation: Depending on your skin's needs, consider incorporating a medical-grade exfoliator once or twice a week. This helps remove dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover. Follow your clinicians recommendations.

Face Mask: Occasionally, you may benefit from using a medical-grade face mask suitable for your skin type. These masks can address specific concerns such as acne, hydration, or brightening.

Tips for Different Skin Types

Dry Skin: If you have dry skin, opt for a richer, more emollient moisturiser to combat dryness and flakiness. Consider using a hydrating mask as part of your weekly routine.

Oily Skin: For oily skin, choose lightweight, oil-free moisturisers and avoid heavy, greasy products. Incorporate a clay mask into your routine to help control excess oil.

Acne-Prone Skin: If you're prone to breakouts, use products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Be cautious with retinoids and consult your clinician for guidance on their use.

Sensitive Skin: Individuals with sensitive skin should look for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products. Patch-test new products and introduce them gradually to minimise the risk of irritation.

Remember...

Don’t Overdo It: Avoid overloading your skin with too many products at once, as this can lead to irritation and sensitivity. Follow your clinicians recommendations and be patient; results may take time.

Patch Test: Before incorporating a new medical-grade product into your routine, conduct a patch test on a small area of your skin to check for any adverse reactions.

Consistency is Key: Stick to your skincare routine consistently to see the best results. It may take several weeks or months to notice significant improvements, so be patient and diligent.

Consult Your clinician: If you experience any unusual reactions or concerns with your skincare routine, don't hesitate to consult your clinician. They can provide personalised advice and make necessary adjustments based on your skin's unique needs and goals.

Everyone's skin is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Medical-grade skin care products are potent and effective, but proper layering and adherence to your clinicians recommendations are essential for safe and successful use.
